What is Kranz anatomy ?
Answers
Kranz anatomy. the special structure of leaves in C4 PLANTS (e.g. maize) where the tissue equivalent to the spongy mesophyll cells is clustered in a ring around the leaf veins, outside the bundle-sheath cells. (The term 'Kranz' means wreath or ring in German).
NCERT based Answer for Class 11 Biology Students
Kranz anatomy:
Large cells around vascular bundles of C4 plants are called bundle sheath cells and such anatomy is called Kranz anatomy.
Note: Kranz means ‘wreath’ (flowers arranged in a circle).
Thus C4 plants have two types of photosynthetic cells: mesophyll cells and bundle sheath cells.
Note: Presence of two types of cells allows separation of light reactions and carbon fixation.
C4 plants contain dimorphic chloroplasts.
Chloroplasts in mesophyll cells are granal i.e., thylakoids are stacked to form grana.
Chloroplasts in bundle sheath cells are agranal i.e., thylakoids are present as stromal lamellae.
As a result, release of O2 takes place in mesophyll while CO2 fixation catalysed by RuBisCO occurs in bundle sheath cells.
