In my experience, an “L” refers to take an above ground ( or ‘'elevated’) subway line. Given the fact that it is above ground, quite a distance above street level, it wasn't felt right to continue to call them ‘'subways’ as in underground, so they were called elevated subway, which eventually devolved into simply “the L.”
