consider a rectangular glass slab.suppose a ray of light is incident on the first surface of slab. then speed of light changes as it enters into denser medium and it gets refracted . light ray bends towards normal.
Now again this refracted ray is incident onto the second surface of glass slab and emerges back into the same medium from which it was initially incident.
as the light ray travels from denser to rarer medium, it moves way from normal. If we extend the incident ray forward , we can see how far the emergent has been displaced from incident ray.
Thus the distance by which the light has been displaced after the bending through a glass slab is called as Lateral displacement or lateral shift.
Lateral shift depends upon:
1. Thickness of glass slab.
2. Refractive index of medium
3. Angle of incident light ray.
