The principle of conservation of momentum states that if there is a direction in which there is a zero unbalanced force acting on a system then the total momentum of that system in that direction is constant even if the bodies act in each other. Note that other forces ,e.g. the pull of the earth ,do not act on the bodies ,but the result can still be used if there is a direction in which the external forces are balanced.
