Leptons are particles with 1/2 integer spin which fall under the category of fermions. They do not interact with the strong force. Leptons consist of both neutral and charged particles. Charged particles such as the electron, the muons and the tau, can combine with atomic nuclei and form composites such as atoms. The neutral particles or the neutrinos, rarely interact with any force or matter particle.Just like quarks, leptons too are categorised into three generations, on basis of mass:*.
1st generation: consists of the lightest particles - the electron and the electron neutrino*.
2nd generation: contains slightly heavier particles - the muon and the muon neutrino*.
3rd generation: houses the most massive leptons - the tau and the tau neutrino

Leptons are said to be elementary particles; that is, they do not appear to be made up of smaller units of matter. Leptons can either carry one unit of electric charge or be neutral. The charged leptons are the electrons, muons, and taus. Each of these types has a negative charge and a distinct mass.
