Light waves are electromagnetic waves because they can travel even in the absence of a material medium, i.e., they do not need any medium for propagation. They can also travel in vacuum.

Spectrum is the band of colours which is obtained on a screen when a polychromatic ray of light is dispersed (split) by a prism. Polychromatic light can only give spectrum, because in it, light rays of different wavelengths are mixed, which gets dispersed because of difference of their speeds.
