Basically, in a very general sense, during photosynthesis carbon dioxide and water are converted to sugar and oxygen. The energy required for this process comes from light. There are two general stages in this process, the light reactions (energy capture) and the Calvin cycle (carbon fixing).

During the light reactions, water is used and oxygen is released. The energy from light is absorbed by chlorophyll and transferred to ATP (energy storage molecule) and NADPH (reduced electron carrier molecule). The ATP and NADPH are then used in the Calvin cycle to convert carbon dioxide into sugar.

Essentially, in the light reactions electrons are removed from water and moved to NADPH in the process of making ATP (phosphorylation). This results in the production of oxygen.

In the Calvin cycle, carbon dioxide is incorporated into a five-carbon molecule making the six-carbon sugar molecule using the energy (ATP) and electrons (NADPH) generated in the light reactions.

The Calvin cycle does not require light. It used to be called the dark reaction, but that implied it occurs only at night, so now it is called the Calvin cycle because it can occur any time.
