In photosynthesis, the light-dependent reactions take place on the thylakoid membranes. The inside of the thylakoid membrane is called the lumen, and outside the thylakoid membrane is the stroma, where the light-independent reactions take place.

Light reactions of photosynthesis directly depends on light. The pigments absorb light energy to produce ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) and NADPH (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate). It includes, Light absorption Water splitting Oxygen release Formation of ATP and NADPH, which is then used in the biosynthetic phase.

In plants, the light reactions take place in the thylakoid membranes of organelles called chloroplasts.
