lightning is a natural phenomenon .Lightning is an electrical discharge caused by imbalances between storm clouds and the ground, or within the clouds themselves. Most lightning occurs within the clouds.Lightning is caused by an electrical discharge of electrons moving very quickly from one place to another. These electrons move so quickly that they superheat the air around them causing it to glow.
Positive lightning is particularly dangerous, because it frequently strikes away from the rain core, either ahead or behind the thunderstorm. It can strike as far as 5 or 10 miles (8 or 16 kilometers) from the storm, in areas that most people do not consider to be a lightning-risk area.

Explanation:

Lightning is a high energy electric discharge between two adjacent clouds or a cloud or ground. The phenomenon of lightning is caused by flow of electric charges in the atmosphere. It occurs because of a massage flow of charges from one to another. When clouds move from one place to another the friction between them and the surrounding air causes charges to develop on them the magnitude of charges increases as the clouds continues to move. Usually, the lower part of a cloud has negative charge where as the upper part of the cloud has a positive charge. When large cloud with negatively charge lower part pass over the electrical neutral ground, a positive charge is induced on the ground. The insulation of the air brakes down and electrons flow through the air to neutralize this charge difference. This generates a huge electric spark in the sky and is observed as lightning.
