J.J Thomson said that atom is a positively charged sphere and negatively charged electron are embedded inside it.
Sir Rutherford passed stream of Alpha particles through a very thin sheet of gold foil(about 1000 atom thick). Alpha particles are positively charged helium ions.
He observed that most of alpha particles passed straight through the gold foil undeflected and very few were deflected.
If atom would have been positively charged then it must had repelled positively charged helium ions.
Rutherford could not provide a suitable explanation for this.

This was the limitation of J.J. Thomson model of atom.

Thomson model of atom could explain the electrical neutrality of the atom but it failed to explain the results of scattering experiments performed by Rutherford consequently it was rejected in favour Rutherford 's model of atom.....
