Acceleration of a body is defined as the rate of change of its velocity with time.
i.e Acceleration = Change in velocity / Time taken for change
or a=
v
−
u
v−u/t
where a = acceleration
v = final velocity of object or body
u = initial velocity of object or body
t = time taken for change in velocity
SI unit is m/s^2
Now, if we consider the change in velocity only in a liner direction, the acceleration would be called linear acceleration.
hope its helps
