Answer:

Lipids are a class of macromolecules that are nonpolar and hydrophobic in nature. Major types include fats and oils, waxes, phospholipids, and steroids. Fats are a stored form of energy and are also known as triacylglycerols or triglycerides. Fats are made up of fatty acids and either glycerol or sphingosine.

Answer:

Lipids are broadly classified into the following types :

1. Simple Lipids

2. Derived Lipids

3. Complex Lipids

  • Phosphorylated Lipids
  • Non- phosphorylated Lipids.

Definitions of each of these types:

1. Simple Lipids are are esters of fatty acids and glycerol. There are 3 fatty acids attached to 1 glycerol molecule.

Examples:

  • Tri - Acyl glycerol
  • Di - Acyl glycerol

2. Complex Lipids are conjugated with some other molecules like proteins and carbohydrates.

The subtypes are phosphorylated and non phosphorylated Lipids.

Examples of phosphorylated Lipids are phosphatidic acid.

Examples of non - phosphorylated Lipids are Sphingomyelin, Cerebrosides and ceramides.

3. Derived Lipids :

These are simple molecules from which lipids are derived.

For example: Fatty acids.
