The lymphatic system is part of the vascular system and an important part of the immune system, comprising a large network of lymphatic vessels that carry a clear fluid called lymph (from Latin, lympha meaning "water" directionally towards the heart. The lymphatic system was first described in the seventeenth century independently by Olaus Rudbeck and Thomas Bartholin. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system is not a closed system. The human circulatory system processes an average of 20 litres of blood per day through capillary filtration, which removes plasma while leaving the blood cells. Roughly 17 litres of the filtered plasma is reabsorbed directly into the blood vessels, while the remaining three litres remain in the interstitial fluid. One of the main functions of the lymph system is to provide an accessory return route to the blood for the surplus three litres.
Lymphatic system:
Lymphatic vessels are present in tissues and collect interstitial fluid from them.
Structurally, lymphatic vessels are similar to veins except for their thinner walls and more valves.
Lymphatic vessels form blind ended capillaries (lacteals) in the tissues.
Lymphatic vessels from all over the body form right and left thoracic ducts which open into right and left subclavian veins (in neck region) respectively.
Thus lymphatic system provides an accessory route for the flow of interstitial fluid into blood.
Lymph:
As the blood passes through capillaries in tissues some fluid (water + minerals + glucose + amino acids + respiratory gases) move out into interstitial spaces. This fluid released out is called interstitial fluid or tissue fluid.
Exchange of nutrients, gases etc. between blood and cells always occur through this fluid.
Lymphatic vessels collect this fluid and drain it back to major veins.
The fluid present in lymphatic vessels is now called lymph. Lymph contains WBCs mainly lymphocytes. It has composition similar to that of plasma except it has lesser proteins.
Lymphocytes which are responsible for immune responses of the body.
Fats are absorbed through lymph in the lacteals present in intestinal villi.
