Sixteen nutrients are essential for plants, out of which, thirteen nutrients are supplied by the soil.

Among these, six nutrients are required in large quantities. As these nitrogenous are required in large quantities,They are called Macro nutrients.

They are: Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium and Sulphur.

  • Macronutrients are a type of dietary necessities that are required in quite large amounts by the body. Examples of macronutrients are calcium, magnesium, and potassium.  
  • For the body to function properly, it needs a balanced diet of carbohydrates, protein, and fat and also vitamins and minerals. Vitamins are elements that are needed by the body in small amounts.
  • Apart from these, there are certain elements that are needed in large amounts and these are called macronutrients. Examples are – calcium, magnesium, potassium, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and others.
  • Without the presence of these nutrients, the body would suffer from a host of ailments like – Osteo-malacia, weakness, confusion and dizziness and others.
