Basically, a diode is used to polarize current in one direction.
There should be a blocking diode in solar panel,when there is little or no light is recieved by panel. To prevent flow of current from battery to panel diode is used in solar panel. Bypass diodes are installed when little or some part of panel is covered and to prevent draw of current from other panels.
