Meristem is a type of tissue found in plants. It consists of abnormal cells (meristematic cells) capable of cell division. The cells of meristem can grow into all other tissues and organs that are produced in plants.

Differentiated plant cells generally cannot divide or produce different types of cells, and the cell division is carried out separately or inseparably, and the division of meristematic cells continues. The division of tissues gives rise to expansion and differentiation of tissues and new cells to give the starting and basic structure of the plant body. These cells are small and without small vacuole and protoplast fill the cell completely. Plastids (chloroplast or chromoplast) are no differences, but are only less developed (proplastids). Cell wall is a very thin primary cell wall.

Karl willows von nagal used the word meristem in his journal in 1858, and was first used by Karl wilheim von nagli. It is derived from marziine (microin), a Greek word, which means elaborating its internal functions.
