Both sulphuric acid and nitric acid dissolve marble to form salts. Acid rain corrodes the marble of the monument. This phenomenon is also known as 'Marble Cancer'. It causes due to, when marble combined with oxygen and moisture, sulphur dioxide settles and corrodes the marble forming a fungus that experts refer to as marble cancer.
