Mass defect is the mass equivalent to the energy that is released during the formation of a nucleus of an atom.
It is the difference between the sum of masses of the individual nucleons and the actual mass of the nucleus in an atom.
example: Oxygen atom has 8 neutrons and 8 protons. Sum their masses. Measure the mass of nucleus in lab. of Oxygen atom. Find the difference.
