Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass(weight). There are three states of matter- solid, liquid and gas.

The matter may have been formed from the pair production, Its actually created out up of two protons. Stars which are large cosmic object, trapped hydrogen atoms in its core. Hydrogen atoms then undergo nuclear fusion reaction to form new atoms. Hydrogen atoms combines with hydrogen to form helium atoms. And so it goes with helium -hydrogen, helium -helium as they continue with the same process. This leads to the formation of lighter atoms. The atoms then apply a trick in this they transfer neutron instead of protons towards the another atom and then the neutron slowly decay with a process into protons. That's how heavier matters came into existence. Then by continuous movements the matter length becomes short.

The greek philosopher
Leucippus and Democritus discovered the term matter.
