As we altitude means height but a circle doesn't have any height only it has radius and diameter. So we can say that as diameter is the longest chord of highest measure so diameter can be called the altitude of the circle.

In a closed figure bounded by lines the altitude is refferd to as the height of the figure for example in a triangle.
