In humans and most mammals and birds, the iris (plural: irides or irises) is a thin, circular structure in the eye, responsible for controlling the diameter and size of the pupil and thus the amount of light reaching the retina. Eye color is defined by that of the iris.

The iris of a human eye is the colored ring between the clear cornea on the outside and the crystalline lens on the inside. In the middle of the iris is the opening called the pupil. Each iris is unique and is genetically determined by the amount of pigment and the structure inside the iris.
