A remote island is an isolated island.....with no outside contact i.e. phones, tv, etc. and it is usually difficult to access, you either have to have a boat, or a lot of money.
A remote area is a place that is distant from any people or activities or buildings. No nearby town. Or it can be an area within a town that is far away from the rest of the town. A warehouse area, for instance, is often remote from most of the town.
