The process of interaction of the ions of the salt with water resulting in a partial reversal of neutralisation is called hydrolysis. As a result of this phenomenon, aqueous solution of many neutral salts often react acidic or alkaline. Thus, an aqueous solution of NH_{4}Cl reacts acidic while that of sodium acetate is alkaline in character.

A neutral salt BA is formed by the neutralisation of the acid HA and the base BOH,

HA + BOH ⇌ BA + OH_{2}O

This salt ionises in water as :

BA ⇌ \B^+ + \A^-
