Shifting Cultivation is a form of agricultural system, in which an area or plot of land is cleared of any vegetation and then used for agricultural purposes. The area is used for some time and then abandoned, to let it regrow its cover of natural vegetation.

It is a non-environmental friendly practice, and has been banned by the Government of India. Yet, in many places in Assam, it is a prominent mode of agriculture.

The most important demerit of such a system is that it causes extensive soil erosion, which is considerably bad in the long run.
