Thomas Hardy, OM (2 June 1840 – 11 January 1928) was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, especially William Wordsworth.[1] He was highly critical of much in Victorian society, especially on the declining status of rural people in Britain, such as those from his native South West England.

I have never read this thought but according to my imaginations and feelings it means that a novelist who is great writes something which is a burden , boon or a curse .
It means that a novelist always tries to write something for the betterment of the society and public feelings.
It shows that what are the problems and the objection which is the mind of that novelist.
A true novelist really writes for a cause and not for funny topics or fairy tales.
Hope it helps
