these are the area where the two block ie. ussr and usa were in direct conflict but it did not result in hot war and shooting war

1. UN was formed to maintain International peace and security and to ensure cooperation amongst nation states. The role of UN has always been put under scrutiny. Even during the cold waryears UN became an arena of cold war politics between US and USSR.2. Today the role of UN has been severely questioned particularly in the context of US influencing its decisions.3. With US as the military and economic superpower and being the biggest donor country in terms of finance , critics argue that UN has become puppet in the hands of US administration.4. The veto power gives US and other members an additional advantage of taking crucial decisions related to war and peace.5. Smaller nations have little or no say in its policy decisions.6. Even though ,member sates of the UN have cooperated on agendas like environment, human rights, child rights, they have preferred to take their independent stand with it comes to conflict and security matters .7. US led Iraq invasion of 2003 haseroded the very credibility of UN, US went ahead with its operation Iraqi freedom despite differencesin the Security Council by France and Russia.8. There have been demands that UN must reflect contemporary political economic realities and must be more representative. India, Germany, Japan are claiming for a permanent seat in UN Security Council.9. Present Syrian crisis is also being carefully watched as US is keen on taking military action andpassing resolution against Syria whereas Russia and China maintain different stands.
