The upward thrust exerted by fluid (water or air) is known as buoyant force.

Bouyant force is the upward force exerted a fluid on an object which is fully or partially immersed in that fluid. Say water; when an obj is fully or partially immersed in water, there are 2 forces acting on it ie. gravitational force ( downward) and Buoyant force ( upward ) and coz of this Buoyant force only objects are able to float on water.
