The tendency of body to float on the liquid is called buoyancy. Any object will float on liquid if there density is less than density of liquid. Any object will sink in liquid if there density is more than the density of liquid.

buoyancy is the upward force experienced by an object fully or partially emersed in a fluid
if the object has a density less than that of water, it will float
if it's density is more than the density of water then it will sink
if the object has a density less than that of water, it will float
if it's density is more than the density of water then it will sink
