Cud means food that ruminants return from the first stomach to chew for second time.

Chewing the cud is nothing but ruminating.

It means chewing the food for the second time in mouth from the first stomach.

'Chewing the cud' is the further chewing of the partly-digested food that is regurgitated or returned from the first compartment of the stomach in certain animals.

  • It is also known as 'rumination'.
  • Cattle is a typical example of ruminant animals. Other examples are goat, sheep, deer, camels, buffalo and giraffes.
  • This process is necessary for these animals because the food they eat is rich in cellulose, so difficult to digest.
  • In the initial round of chewing, the food is moistened and swallowed when the food goes into the rumen (1st part of the stomach).
  • There it is mixed with the acidic digestive juices and softened. This softened food is called cud.
  • This then moves to the 2nd part of the stomach, reticulum, which balls up the cud sent from the rumen and trigger the regurgitation of the cud to the mouth.
  • This cud is now further chewed to completion and swallowed again.
  • This  time it reaches the 3rd (omasum) and then the last (abomasum) parts of the stomach respectively for its complete digestion.
