A process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one is called  osmosis.

osmosis is the spontaneous net movement of solvent molecules through a  semi- permeable membrance into a region of higher solute concentration, in the direction that tends to eqalize the solute concentration on two sides. osmosis is a vital process in biological systems. as biological membeances are semipermeable.
