Doctrine of Lapse was a policy adopted by Lord Dalhousie which stated that if a ruler of a territory or state under the British rule dies without a heir the territory will automatically pass on to the British Government.

lord dalhousie the then viceroy of india prepared an act in which the kings who have no heirs must hand over thier properties and kingdoms to british governament. this is responsible for 1857 revolt.
