Many detergents and fertilizers contain phosphates, when phosphates are discharged into the water bodies,their remains promote rapid growth of algae and leads to the depletion of oxygen in the water bodies. This process is termed as eutrophication.It is very harmful because aquatic weeds multiply in these affected water bodies.
