-I effect is called negative inductive effect and it means the electron withdrawing substituents tend to attract electrons examples are halogens

+I effect is electron donating substituents and to donate share electrons examples alkyl groups

plus I is positive inductive effect and minus eye is negative inductive effect example of + I is halogens and minus I is alkyl group
