HOPE THAT IT HELPS YOU IN IUPAC NOMENCLATURE.............

kingofkings00016: iso is here because the propane can be attached in two ways in the main chain
kingofkings00016: from the middle carbon or by sideways carbon
annie76: okay but then why in 5-propyl there is no iso while propyl is attached in sideways??
annie76: wait I'll ask this question clearly again and so you will answer there and can get points too
kingofkings00016: ISO means second carbon not first carbon
annie76: ????
annie76: :( i didnt got it
kingofkings00016: if there is a middle carbon of propane is attached to the main chain then it is treated as a substituent
annie76: okay i got it but check if I'm wrong -- you mean if there is a middle carbon which has 2 more carbons (means its a propyl) then we use iso to mention that there was a carbon connected in between to the reader
annie76: correct????

step 1 - longest carbon chain has 8 carbons, so it is called a octane

step 2 - at carbon numbered 4, you have 3 more carbons attached to it, so it is a PROPYL group.

step 3 - in that 3 carbons, 1st carbon divides into 2 more carbons, so it is called a secondary carbon or iso carbon.

step 4 - so that dividing carbon is called a secondary propyl or isopropyl group.

step 5 - when naming the entire structure you count the main structure carbons which have more attachments to it.

step 6 - at carbon 4 and at carbon 5 there are isopropyl or secondary propyl groups attached.

step 7 - it can be called as 4-isopropyl.

infinityleague80: hope that helps
annie76: it helped me alot thank you so much
annie76: can you help me more please !!! i need help so much right now
infinityleague80: i can try
annie76: alright :)
annie76: oh sorry i forgot to tell this -- check my recently asked question in chemistry and answer it there
infinityleague80: it is answered already :-)
annie76: yup just right now but there was another ques which I just have asked the "unsaturated- --radical" can you please try to answer that one??
annie76: excuse me if you're there then can you please help me??!!!
