A few years ago, I supervised an environmental chemistry lab that used a vented oven to dry samples for solids analysis. One day, I opened the oven to move samples to a desiccator and was surprised to have flames shooting out at me. I immediately closed both the oven door and the vent and went in search of the culprit who had apparently placed a solvent-laced sample in the oven without first air-drying it in a hood. No one in my group admitted to the indiscretion. While I was cleaning up the mess, though, I noticed a large metal tray similar to that used by the guys in the nearby organic prep lab but never in our oven. Upon checking with the people in that lab, one person admitted to ownership of the sample. I said that I was surprised that the ovens in the organic lab were full. “Oh, no,” he responded cheerfully, “The method said to put the acidified [and ether-soaked] sodium sulfate in a vacuum oven.”
