Mitochondria is a double membrane bound organelle found in eukaryotic cell except mammalian RBC.

It was first seen by Kollikar in insect cells but Altmann discovered it while the term Mitochondria was coined by Benda.

It consists of 2 parts --->

1) Cristae -- It is the inner mitochondrial membrane that is folded inward forming finger like projections.

2) Matrix -- It is the fluid present in mitochondria. It contains DNA and ribosomes. It is the site of Kreb's Cycle.

Mitochondria is called 'Power House of the Cell'. This is because the energy released during cellular respiration is stored inside and is supplied to the cell whenever it is required.
