osmosis is a special type of diffusion which envolves the movement of solvent through a semi-permeable membrane from an area where it is in high concentration [less concentrated solution] to an area where it is in low concentration [more concentrated solution].
If the medium surrounding the cell has a lower concentration of water than the cell, the cell will lose water by osmosis. Such a solution is known as a hypertonic solution.
