Poisson’s ratio is the ratio of lateral strain to longitudinal strain.Whenever there is longitudinal stress in one direction, dimensions in other directions are also affected in addition to the change in dimension in that direction in which stress is applied. Hence poisson’s ratio is useful in calculation of strains in various directions if the element is subjected to more than one dimensional stress.
