Before printing presses were invented by Guthenburg, all reading matter was written out by hand, so was SLOW to produce,and therefore very expensive. As most people couldn't read, it was okay. 

When the printing revolution happened, printed materials became mass produced so were cheaper and available to far more people. As literacy improved, all this reading material meant that people were able to a) know more things b) think more deeply c) question the status ... which lead to revolution and reform.

Print revolution refers to the change in society due to the circulation of print.
