A "regional party " is any political party with its base in a single region, whatever it's objectives and platform may be, whereas "regionalist "parties are a sunset of regional parties that specifically campaign for greater autonomy or independence in their region.

According to the criteria laid down by the election commission , a party that secures at least six per cent of the total votes in an election to the legislative assembly of a state and wins at least two seats is recognized as a state party.
