What is meant by scalar and vector?

scalar quantity has magnitude(size) only
while vector quantity has both magnitude and direction.

the quantities having magnitude but no direction are called scalar quantities

eg :- speed , distance 
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the quantities having both magnitude and direction are called vector quantities

eg :- velocity , acceleration
