Map scale refers to the relationship (or ratio) between distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the ground. For example, on a 1:100000 scale map, 1cm on the map equals 1km on the ground.

Meaning of Scale a Map
- The map scale reflects the real distance from the map units of any geographic or man-made entity.
- For example: A 1:10000 scale states that 1 unit of any map measurement mode is equal to 10,000 ground measurement mode.
- This measuring mode could be cm, km, feet and so on. Thus 1 cm of map can be 1000 m, 10,000 km, 200,000 feet, etc.
- The scale is used in both horizontal and vertical directions to depict the comparative distance.
