Revamped Public Distribution System was launched by government on the 1st January, 1992 in 1775 backward and remote regions which were suffering from drought. Under RPDS, government is setting up 11,000 fair price shops and 1000 additional godowns with a storage capacity of 3,30,000 tonnes. The main objective of RPDS is to ensure that minimum amount of foodgrains can be provided to poor people living below the poverty line.
