A ligand may contain one or more unshared pairs of electrons which are called the donor sites of ligands. Now, depending on the number of these donor sites, ligands can be classified as follows:
(a)Unidentate ligands:Ligands with only one donor sites are called unidentate ligands. Fore.g Cl3-etc.(b)Didentate ligands:Ligands that have two donor sites are called didentate ligands. For e.g.,
(a) Ethane-1,2-diaminec)Ambidentate ligands:
Ligands that can attach themselves to the central metal atom through two different atoms are called ambidentate ligands. For example:
(a)The donor atom is N(b) The donor atom is oxygen
(c)The donor atom is S(d)The donor atom is N

Hey !!

UNIDENTATE LIGAND

A molecule or an ion which has only one donor atom to form one coordinate bond with the central metal atom is called unidentate ligand.

BIDENTATE LIGAND

A molecule or an ion which contains two donor atoms and hence forms two coordinate bonds with the central metal atom is called a bidentate ligand.

AMBIDENTATE LIGAND

A molecule or an ion which contains two donor atoms but only one of them forms a coordinate bond at a time with the central atom is called ambidentate ligand.
