Answer:

Merits:

1. He fit all the then-known elements into his periodic table.

2. He left gaps for some elements that would be discovered later. As a result, when noble gases were discovered, they fit in perfectly.

3. He predicted the properties of some elements that would be discovered in the future having properties similar to those of then-known element. These were eka-aluminium (gallium), eka-boron (scandium) and eka-silicon (germanium).

Demerits:

1. Isotopes of all elements posed a huge challenge to Mendeleev's periodic table.

2. He placed some elements with greater mass before those with lesser mass in order for the elements to fit into his periodic table (eg, Co before Ni, Al before Si, etc).

3. He could not allot a proper place for Hydrogen as it had properties similar to both halogens as well as alkali metals.

Explanation:

Merits of Mendellev's peeiodic table-

It gave a schematic study of elements

He predicted the existance of some elementa which were not discovered yet so he left their space and named them like eka boron ,etc which helped in quick discovery of new elements

Mendellev's table was most acurate up to date

When noble gases were discovered, they were placed as a seperate period-0 without disturbing existing order.

Limitation of mendellev's periodic table-

1.medeleev could not explain the position of hydrogen,it was not given a fixed position in the table.

2.later when isotops were discovered, there was no space for isotops to be placed

3. This table was based on periodicity..which means that atomic mass increase in a period and down a group but some elements were placed before which were of slightly higher atomic no.

THIS ALL HAPPEN BECAUSE MENDELLEV TOOK ATOMIC NO. AS THE BASIS OF CLASSIFICATION BUT MASS NO. WAS TO BE TAKEN !
