The agents of metamorphism include heat, pressure (stress), and chemically active fluids. During metamorphism, rocks are often subjected to all three metamorphic agents simultaneously.

Metamorphic rocks arise from the transformation of existing rock types, in a process called metamorphism, which means "change in form". The original rock is subjected to heat and pressure, causing profound physical or chemical change. The protolith may be a sedimentary, igneous, or existing metamorphic rock.

Metamorphic rocks form from preexisting rocks that have been altered by the agents of metamorphism, which include heat, pressure, and chemically active fluids.
