The transformation of an larva to an adult is called metamorphosis . Metamorphosis in insects is controlled by insect hormones . In a frog it is controlled by a hormone named thyroxine which is produced by thyroid . Thyroxine production requires the presence of iodine in water and if the water in which the tadpoles are growing does not contain sufficient iodine then the tadpoles cannot become adults .
