Solid chemical compounds occurring naturally in pure form are known as minerals. They have a definite chemical composition and physical properties. They are combinations of homogeneous substances that occur in the following ways:

• Minerals occur in cracks, crevices, joints and faults, particularly in igneous and metamorphic rocks

• They also occur in sedimentary rocks particularly in the form of beds and layers. Coal, iron ore, gypsum and sodium salt are some of the minerals found in sedimentary rocks.
