Mitochondria are either rod shaped or spherical in shape. Their size ranging from 0.2 nanometer to 2 nanometer.They are distributed throughout the cytoplasm. Each mitochondrion(singular) is enclosed by a double membrane. In contrast to the outer membrane, which is smooth and plain,the surface of the inner membrane is folded, a feature that considerably increases the surface area. These folds of inner membrane are known as cristae .

Function:

Mitochondria contain enzymes for catalysing biochemical reactions involving in respiration. Energy is produced in this process. The energy released in the form of ATP(adenosine triphosphate) is needed for various functions of body. For this reason, mitochondria are called the 'powerhouse of the cell'.

ATP is known as the energy currency of the cell..
