During mitosis, the mother cell divides once to form two daughter cells. The two daughter cells have the same number of chromosomes in their DNA as the mother cell. The major purpose of mitosis is for growth and to replace worn out cells. Mitosis occurs in organisms that reproduce by asexual methods and the ones that involve only one parent. The daughter cells are identical to each other.
